Meet Uptown: Community Events Grant
Each year, Uptown’s SSA #34 sponsors several community events throughout the neighborhood. In 2016, the SSA supported many community events big and small in all parts of Uptown. The Events Grant funds events that can demonstrate a measurable benefit to fostering the community’s growth and development. Any business, organization, or individual that will be programming an event within the SSA is eligible to apply, with preference given to businesses, organizations, and individuals that reside within the district.
ICA’s Uptown Garden Walk
Uptown’s Institute of Cultural Affairs planned three walking tours that drew over 100 neighbors and visitors, who explored unexpected spaces transformed into gardens, restored native habitat along the lake, and several community gardens that reflect Uptown’s rich cultural history and diversity.
Buena Park’s Concert in the Park
Organized by the Buena Park Neighbors, the second Concert in the Park event at Buena Park’s Circle Park drew hundreds for live music, food trucks, and family activities.
Argyle Night Market
The ever-popular Argyle Night Market is partially funded by Uptown’s SSA #34. In it’s fourth year, it runs for eight weeks every Thursday in July and August. This year, each market brought 2,500 people to Argyle Street.
Uptown Saturday Nights
The free concert series partners with large city-wide festivals such as the World Music Festival, the Jazz Festival, and others, to popularize Uptown’s many entertainment venues. The SSA’s support helped publicize the event series, which helped result in the concerts bringing thousands of visitors to Uptown.
Windy City RibFest
The SSA secured local performers and entertainment for this July 4th weekend festival, along with Uptown-specific promotional materials for the popular event.
PGP’s Plant Sale
The Peterson Garden Project moved their 2016 plant sale event to Uptown, which the SSA helped support. The annual event lets local urban gardeners stock up on plants and supplies at discounted rates, while raising funds for PGP’s many programs.
Argyle Lunar New Year Celebration
This popular annual event celebrates the coming lunar new year with firecrackers, a parade, and dragon dancers. The SSA’s funds secured the stage for event speakers and entertainment.
