Sweet Home Uptown
About this Event
In 2020, Voice of the People in Uptown is commemorating our work in affordable housing with a look to fifty years past and the next fifty years to come, honoring some of the many who created affordable housing opportunities in Uptown and throughout Chicagoland.
Sweet Home Uptown features an All Stars Blues Band, stories of hope and struggle, awards and games, reception rooms and chats that will promote networking and sharing of history, and more, all on Thursday, October 8th, streamed online.
About Voice of the People
Born 50 years ago as a community response to demolition and disinvestment, Voice of the People has delivered on its initial promise to create affordable housing and we’ve empowered tenants by engaging them in community development, property management and issues of social justice. At a time when gentrification threatens the diversity we appreciate in Chicago, we need bold advocacy and creative programming to support low-income people and to strengthen the ability of owners to provide affordable housing.
Doug Dobmeyer, long time Voice Board Member and President, and founder of Lakefront SRO corporation.
Larry Pusateri, an early staff person at Lakefront SRO, who went on to finance dozens of projects benefiting Uptown residents and people needing affordable housing throughout the Midwest.
Yittayih Zelalem, former Voice staffer and current Co-Director of the University of Illinois Voorhees Center for Neighborhood & Community Improvement. Yittayih played key roles in Uptown’s “International Homes” Project and “Lakeview Towers,” a 500-unit resident-controlled development.
