Tai Chi Introductory series:
This course series offers hands-on instruction in a small group setting for the first third of Yang style Tai Chi. The shortened thirty-seven-posture form is ideal for busy lifestyles, taking only about ten minutes to perform. The instructor will present the general history, meaning, and philosophy of Tai Chi and its place in Chinese culture. Each class will cover a new set of postures and a thorough review of the postures already introduced. In this way, students develop an intimate familiarity with the Tai Chi form through repetition and corrections by the instructor and can continue a dedicated, independent, and life-long practice. Yang Style Tai Chi places emphasis on principles, body mechanics, and the resulting health benefits including stress reduction and improved range of motion, coordination, balance, energy & concentration.
About the teacher:
Greg Bell, LAc.
Greg is a certified Tai Chi instructor as well as an acupuncturist and clinical bodyworker in the Chicagoland area. Greg graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine with a Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine. His understanding of acupuncture theory and Oriental Medicine give him a unique perspective, unfamiliar to most martial arts instructors, on the meanings of Tai Chi postures and applications and how they provide health benefits.
Greg studied Yang family style Tai Chi for nearly a decade, and for the last five years, has taught at numerous venues in the Chicagoland area. He teaches Cheng Man-ch’ing’s shortened thirty-seven-posture form. For those who become proficient in this form, he also teaches Shu family Tai Chi applications, which stress yielding and self-disappearance rather than attacking and self-defense.
