Uptown United and the Uptown Chamber of Commerce stand in solidarity with our neighbors, business owners, friends, and colleagues of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Uptown United and the Uptown Chamber of Commerce stand in solidarity with our neighbors, business owners, friends, and colleagues of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We condemn and fight against the increased discrimination, harassment, and violence against the AAPI community and racism in any form. Uptown prides itself on its diversity. It is a welcoming place for people with all kinds of backgrounds and stories. Uptown has been a center of Chicago’s Asian-American community for many decades, and now many in our community are nervous, anxious, and fear for their safety.

A recent report by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State University, San Bernardino, tracked police department statistics across major US cities and found a nearly 150% surge in anti-Asian American hate crimes in 2020. This reflects a growing trend of discrimination against AAPI people during the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to violent anti-Asian crimes, we have heard from local AAPI-owned businesses that their sales have been impacted by anti-Asian sentiment going back as far as January 2020. This discrimination and violence must end.

What can you do? 

Many Uptown organizations were founded by and serve the neighborhood’s diverse Asian-American communities. Consider donating to or volunteering with these incredible organizations:
